SEDENTARY MARATHONER?

Sounds like an oxymoron, but in my case it's kinda true.

On days I work out, if I work out, my run or bike is basically the only activity I do that day.

On days I don't work out, I hardly move. And there are as many of those days as there are workout days.

Maybe I take the dog ambling briefly in the desert. This hardly counts.

Or, maybe once a week, I go hiking (with Steve or with the campground hiking group.)

Question for everyone:
Not counting swim/bike/run/walk/weights or any kind of workout... just daily activity... like at work, or housework, or caring for kids, whatever is it that you do...

How much moving around do you actually do?

i am like that too. I consider that as recovery time.

I kinda like having a desk job that is 9-5. At least my body is recovering while I work.

Ellie, if this comment works, I will be amazed at myself.

I know what you mean about how much time do I spend sitting around? Almost all day 5 days a week--40+ hours at the job (although I do get up from time to time and our office is on 5 floors, so there are always steps) plus probably at least 2 more hours each night, either watching TV, reading, or on the computer. Sometimes I actually stand watching TV but I hardly count that as being active.

It worked, Vickie! Way to go!

Vickie and Cliff have an excuse... a job. I don't have one. I spend too much time sitting at my computer nevertheless....

VERY VERY little movement outside of my races. Except for my "cross-training" in the garden. I spend LOTS of time at the PC, editing pics, uploading them to my Blog or sharing them with my running clubs & friends, writing my race reports. All of which I heartily enjoy, but I SHOULD also get back into my YOGA, working on my ACTING stuff (you know, actors need to audition every now and then!), clean the HOUSE every once in a while, etc.

But at least my butt is not glued to the TV chair, or couch-potatoed! :-)

Other than the first week of the month I am at my desk closing out, I am very active all day long except for when I am at home then its my Fortess of Solitude and I seldom move because I want to decompress.

Then theres the Mighty Mo, so really do I have that much time to rest?

Ellie, I'll bet you move more than you imagine. You can check it out with a cheapie Walmart pedometer and I'll bet you'll be surprised!

I was looking at the training page for the 25k I hope to do, which should also work with the 1/2 marathon next month (most of which I will be walking!) and it has a 10,000 steps program, which is states is about 5 miles. Its mainly for walking. So I decided to count my steps in the office, actually taking the steps. It is 205 steps to the 6th floor from the 9th to our mailroom. So if I did that 41 times a day, I would get 5 miles in.

I have a desk job, so other than walking up and down the stairs, I don't usually do much outside my planned physical activity.

I think that's kind of the way of things in our modern world, though. If we were getting exercise from day to day activities, most of us would use our free time for rest, not for five mile tempo runs. :-)

not much! I've contemplated this issue as well, but really, I think we earn our sedentary-ness with our workouts. Besides, rest is when your body repairs itself and GETS STRONGER! Woohoo!!!! :)

I'm with Cliff, except I work 7-4. I like being off early so I can still get in a run or something before family time or bed time. Compared to some I would be sedentary compared to others I'm over active. Its all relative, my dear.
