Well. I was planning on making a Wal-Mart and super-market run to the town of North Conway today.
Emergency vehicles/police cars have been screaming past our campground in numbers I didn't know existed around here, for the last couple hours. I thought there must be a wreck or fire north of here, but the sirens have kept coming and coming.
Turns out there's been a store shooting somewhere in North Conway (about 12 miles away.) I don't know if someone shot up a whole store or if it was a convenience-store holdup or something. Anyway, the guy is on the loose, and all of North Conway is essentially shut down to keep him from going into other stores.
I guess I'm not going to Wal-Mart or the grocery store. In addition to some groceries and new hiking/camping gear, I was going to buy a bunch of backpacking food to send to "Low Branch" on the Appalachian Trail, whose journal I've been following -- he's running out of money and thinking he won't be able to finish the distance. I was going to box up some stuff and send it to his next mail-drop, which is a time-sensitive target. Been waiting for a day off when I can get to the post office. Tomorrow I'll be hiking. Wednesday I'm working again.
Amazing how someone shooting someone in a store in North Conway, NH can affect a hiker on the Appalachian Trail in New York. Everything we do creates ripples.

Wow. We really are connected in surprising ways. I wonder if there's a way to wire him money?
a butterfly flaps it's wings... you know the rest :)
Oh, and check out this guy's trail journal. He's a friend of mine... we worked together at the bike shop last summer.
